Martin has a limb deficiency and his lower left arm is missing. He began swimming in 1996, when he was six, as his family encouraged him with the ambition set in winning gold medals in international events. He has certainly delivered on that ambition, with Paralympic gold at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 as well as multiple Para Series and World Championships to his name.
