Echternach European Cup

Athletes from a grand total of 16 nations were participating in this years ITU International Triathlon Event and ETU Triathlon Echternach.

In the men’s competition, Clayton Fettel (AUS) was the first to exit the water closely followed by Andrew Fargus (GBR) and Andrew Wright (HKG). After the bike laps, Sabastien Gacond (SUI) had managed to gather a 20 second lead over a group consisting of Matthew Murphy (AUS), Goris Stijn (BEL) and Fargus. Even though Ruedi Wild managed the best running time it was only enough to get into third place following Andrew Fargus and the victorious Matthew Murphy.

The women’s competition was marked by a group consisting of Birgit Berk (NED), Sibylle Mater (SUI and Céline Rositano (BEL) exiting the swim course together to make their way onto the bike track. Thanks to the best bike performance, Kaisa Lehtonen of Finland managed to get herself into the third position before the athletes made it onto the running laps. Carmel Hanly (NZL) who, after a bad swim, exiting the water in tenth position only, had already made up some positions to make it onto the run in fourth spot now performed the fasted running time to take the win ahead of Sibylle Matter and Ewa Dedenko (POL).

Yannick Lieners (LUX) won the first ETU Junior Cup men’s race after an average swim, leaving him in tenth place. Thanks to a grouping of athletes and an outstanding running performance he was able to lay claim to the top spot and leave Todd Leckie (GBR) and Gerbert Van den Biggelaar (NED) behind him.

The Junior women’s race saw Maailie Caelers (NED) take the win ahead of Anne Kwist (NED) and Sophie Margue (LUX) after outperforming her competitors in the running distance.
