USA Triathlon appoint new CEO and first COO
USA Triathlon has appointed Rob Urbach as its new Chief Executive Officer and Tim Yount as the first Chief Operating Officer in its history.
Urbach will be the ninth Chief Executive Officer in USA Triathlon’s history and brings with him more than 20 years of experience in elite sports management. Urbach joins USA Triathlon from Cortview Capital Markets where he was Managing Director and previously was Executive Vice President of Octagon - helping to lead operations of the global sports management and marketing firm.
“After an exhaustive international search that included many exceptionally qualified candidates, the Board of Directors is pleased that Rob will be joining us,” said USA Triathlon President Bob Wendling. “Rob has a long background in the sport and a strong corporate experience that USA Triathlon requires to continue its unprecedented growth. The Board welcomes him as the leader of the staff and the National Governing Body.”
Urbach previously worked as the Executive Vice President of the SFX Sports Group, a division of Clear Channel Communications, and started his career working for legendary agent David Falk, who represented Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing and numerous other NBA stars. As well as his business history, Urbach is also a proficient age-group triathlete with a passion for the sport.
“As a long-time USA Triathlon member and passionate multisport enthusiast I am honored to be able to serve all the organisation’s constituencies,” said Urbach. “I look forward to working with USA Triathlon’s staff, Board and partners in an effort to further engage every American in the multisport lifestyle.”
Yount is USA Triathlon’s longest serving employee, having managed almost all of every one of the national governing bodies major program’s since starting in 1989.
He started as USA Triathlon’s Championship and Team USA Coordinator, then took on the role of Assistant Executive Director. He has twice served as Acting CEO during his tenure - first in 2004 and now, beginning in September 2010. He has also managed the US delegation at more than 50 International Triathlon Union World Championships, and was USA team leader for triathlon’s Olympic debut in Sydney. He also was integral to the development of several core USA Triathlon programs, including junior, elite, drug testing and club programmes and coaching certification.
“The Board of Directors is extremely pleased to offer Tim a new and elevated position within the organisation,” said Wendling. “Tim’s background and experience in the sport is unsurpassed, and his new charter will complement what we now feel is one of the superior core leaderships among U.S. Olympic National Governing Bodies.”
