The World Para Triathlon events to follow in 2025

The northern hemisphere may be deep in the throes of winter as its southern counterparts enjoy the height of summer, but this is no time to slow down or hibernate. Not when the first World Triathlon races of the 2025 season are just around the corner. Para triathlon is no exception and the opening scenes of what will surely prove a dramatic campaign of World Para Series and World Para Cups are less than five weeks away. Read on to find out when and where all the top para triathlon events will be taking place this year.

15th-16th February – WORLD PARA CUP ABU DHABI

The season kicks off with a return to Abu Dhabi (UAE) for the first World Cup of the season. As several athletes have taken breaks after the efforts of qualifying for and racing at the Paris Paralympic Games, Abu Dhabi will likely stand as a chance for others to spring an upset against the world and Paralympic champions of last year. Typically among one of the fastest courses of the circuit, look for plenty of cobwebs to be blown away.

14th-15th March – WORLD PARA SERIES DEVONPORT

The following month, the World Para Series returns with the stop in Devonport (AUS). This will be the third time in a row Devonport has hosted a Series race and the action has not disappointed thus far. Getting the sea swim right is often key to setting up a good race at the venue, something Anu Francis and Grace Brimelow managed last year as they brought home gold for the Australian team. Their challenge this time round will be to repeat the feat.

17th May – WORLD PARA SERIES YOKOHAMA

In one of the highlights of the para triathlon season, Yokohama (JPN) then returns. The classic stop is the sole Series event in which the para triathletes rub shoulders with their WTCS colleagues. Jumpei Kimura (PTWC) is one of multiple gold medal threats from the home team that could dazzle. After all, he stormed to victory at the 2023 iteration of the race.

24th-25th May – WORLD PARA CUP SAMARKAND

After making its debut on the circuit last year, Samarkand (UZB) returns as the second World Para Cup stop of the season. The single-lap 5km run at the end of this race can feel particularly long and sapping, especially when chasing rivals ahead. Getting off to a strong start across the swim and bike is therefore particularly helpful in Samarkand.

7th-8th June – WORLD PARA SERIES TARANTO

Another relatively new venue on the World Para Triathlon calendar then returns a few weeks later. Taranto (ITA) first appeared on the World Para Cup circuit in 2023 and has provided some eye-catching races over the past two years. Last year, Giovanni Achenza (PTWC) delivered a stylish gold medal for the home team and could be among the ones to watch this season.

12th-13th July – WORLD PARA CUP MAGOG

A month later, we will then come to the first new event of the para triathlon season. Magog (CAN) makes its World Para Cup bow after hosting an Americas Triathlon Cup last year. The race falls a week before the third and final World Para Series event, which also takes place in Canada. As such, expect the home team to show out in force with the likes of PTS5 world champion Stefan Daniel and World Para Series gold medallist Kamylle Frenette (PTS5) likely to feature in the hunt for victory.

19th July – WORLD PARA CUP TATA

Tata (HUN) made its first appearance on the World Para Cup circuit last year to great success. As with Samarkand, it will look to build upon the solid foundations established in 2024 and continue the expansion of para triathlon into new frontiers. The bike course in Tata is slightly hilly and therefore presents a different challenge to that seen as several other locations.

19th-20th July – WORLD PARA SERIES MONTREAL

On the same weekend as the Tata World Para Cup, the World Para Series will conclude in Montreal (CAN). Whereas the bike section in Tata is on the hillier side, Montreal brought a rapid course to bear last season with the action taking place on a race track. As with the Magog World Para Cup a week prior, we will see if the likes of Daniel and Frenette can sate the home team’s need for speed. The latter will be particularly confident in light of her victory in Montreal last year. For his part, the former will look to improve upon his 2024 silver in Montreal.

6th September – WORLD PARA CUP ALHANDRA

Alhandra (POR) represents the next world level racing opportunity for the world’s top para triathletes ahead of the World Championships in Wollongong (AUS) on 15th-16th October. Like Samarkand, it features a single-lap 5km run to end the race. At last year’s race, Filipe Marques (PTS5) of the home team expertly managed his race as he built up a lead ahead of the run and held on to take the win, despite the efforts of faster runners behind that simply could not close the gap.

25th-26th October – WORLD PARA CUP ALANYA

Finally, the World Para Cup comes to an end in Alanya (TUR). Alanya last hosted a World Para Cup in 2022 and makes a welcome return to the circuit. By that point, the season will have stretched into its tenth month and there may be some weary bodies on the start line. Based on previous events in the Turkish town, though, the racing will not lack for entertainment.

With all that is set to follow this year, the message is simple. Forget winter. Triathlon is coming.
