The 2025 World Triathlon Para Series commenced today in Devonport, Tasmania, marking the 40th anniversary of the Devonport Triathlon. This prestigious event attracted elite para triathletes from around the globe, competing across various classifications. Twenty-six para triathletes from nations including Australia, Spain, the United States, Ireland, Greece and Japan started their season in Tasmania. The 2025 World Triathlon Para Series race in Devonport was based from the Mersey Bluff Precinct, a scenic coastal venue that has long been a central hub for triathlon events in Tasmania, Australia.
Susana Rodriguez secures dominant victory in PTVI
Spanish Paralympic champion Susana Rodriguez (PTVI) opened her 2025 season in dominant fashion, securing victory at the World Triathlon Para Series Devonport. Competing in Australia for the first time, Rodriguez delivered a strong performance and expressed her excitement about starting the year with a win.
Reflecting on the race, Rodriguez described it as a 'hard and tough challenge', but one that provided the perfect way to kick off her season. The Spanish champion praised the Devonport course, the organisation, and the atmosphere of the event, embracing the opportunity to compete in a new location.
Howie Sanborn wins PTWC gold for the USA
Howie Sanborn of the United States delivered a standout performance to take gold in the Men’s PTWC category in Devonport. In a competitive race, Sanborn powered through the course to secure victory, marking a strong start to his season.
Sanborn was joined on the podium by Japan’s Jumpei Kimura, who claimed silver and Australia’s Dave Miln, who took bronze in front of an enthusiastic home crowd. With this win, Sanborn sets the tone for what promises to be an exciting season ahead
Lauren Parker dominates on home soil
Australia’s Lauren Parker delivered a commanding performance at the 2025 World Triathlon Para Series Devonport, proving once again why she is one of the most dominant athletes in the sport. The reigning Paris Paralympic champion was in a league of her own in the Women’s PTWC category, producing a strong and confident race from start to finish.
Parker, a powerhouse in Para triathlon, was thrilled with her performance, highlighting the race as a fantastic way to build momentum for the season ahead. Racing on home soil, she embraced the challenge of the Devonport course and the support of the local crowd. With this victory, Parker sets a high standard as she continues to prepare for 2025.
“It was really good. This is the best race to start the season and I’m really happy with my performance. I wasn’t sure where I was going to be at in terms of my power output and overall time, but I did better than expected. I felt really good out there - it was a really good swim, and I pushed it on the bike like a time trial,” said Parker.
Paris Paralympians impress in Devonport
Several Paris Paralympians made a strong statement in their season debuts, with Australia’s Grace Brimelow (PTS4), Anu Francis (PTS2), Jack Howell (PTS5), Jeremy Peacock (PTS4), Thomas Goodman (PTS2), and Sam Harding (PTVI) – alongside Olympian Aaron Royle (Guide) – claiming victories on home soil.
“It hurt, which is good. I definitely can’t say that it was an easy win, but I’m really happy to get another win—I always love winning here,” said Howell.
“The swim was the fastest swim I’ve ever done in Devonport. Usually, you can expect a bit of surf, so it was nice to go fast on the flat water. Definitely on the bike and the run, going west, you could feel that wind—it makes you work hard, that’s for sure,” he added.
Dynes and Malakopoulos claim gold in PTS5 and PTS3
Michelle Dynes (USA) showcased her strength and strategy in the Women’s PTS5 category, claiming gold with an impressive race set-up. From the start, Dynes executed a well-planned and powerful performance, securing victory and laying a strong foundation for her season ahead.
In the Men’s PTS3 class, Stylianos Malakopoulos (GRE) delivered a commanding display to take gold at the World Triathlon Para Series Devonport. Demonstrating exceptional race execution, he further cemented his status as a major contender on the circuit this season.
The 2025 World Triathlon Para Series features several key events across the globe. After commencing in Devonport, Tasmania, the series will continue in Yokohama, Japan, on the 17th of May.
